Lewes in Bloom History & Mission
The idea for Lewes in Bloom came in 2001, when Warren Golde, horticulturalist & landscape designer, was stranded in England following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11th.
Warren decided to visit Lewes in the south of England, for which Lewes, Delaware town is named. The town was beautifully adorned with flowers, plants and other welcoming accoutrements. Golde was inspired to bring this vision to Delaware, where he started Lewes in Bloom as a non-profit organization in 2001, leading to our first garden year in 2002.
The transformation of Lewes' public spaces, gardens and parks into vibrant and beautiful areas is a testament to the power of community.
"What began with a handful of dedicated volunteers has blossomed into Lewes in Bloom, a thriving organization that now includes more than 500 members."
The purpose of Lewes in Bloom is to promote and maintain the beautification of Lewes public gardens and parks through floral displays, landscaping and installation of public art. LIB's goals are to be a reliable community resource; to provide opportunities for members, residents and community supporters to enhance the Lewes city landscape; and to offer educational programming for the membership and the broader Lewes community.
Lewes in Bloom, INC. (LIB) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation.
