Minutes of General Meeting of Lewes In Bloom at Cadbury at Lewes
Tuesday October 11, 2011

Those in attendance were:  Cindy Albright, Joyce Alti, Wanda Berrigan, Susan Bitzer, Brenda Brady, Debbie Burns, Rose Canavan, Maddy Coss, Lynda Dunham, Helga Gayowski, Sue Glembocki, Warren Golde, Judy Heims, Donna Hoyt, Barbara Hunt, Evelyn Kyritsis, Kathleen McCain, Kathy McDonough, Kathy McGovern, Sandy Mooney, Diana O’Hagan, Barbara Petterson, Brenda Sharp.

The meeting was called to order by Warren Golde. He thanked the volunteers who pulled out the plantings at Graves and Vesuvio. Warren asked for volunteers to meet at City Hall on Wednesday Oct. 19 at 8:30 to pull the City Hall planters and at 1812 Park. Rain date is Thursday 10/20.

Judy Heims gave a summary of the income from the Plant Sale. A total of $963 was made which included $597 from tulip sales and $100 from the sale of garden gloves. After costs a profit of $266 was made.

The sale of tulips at the Farmers Market on 10/8 netted $396 with $106 of donated bulbs to LIB for planting in Lewes. The cost of first batch of tulips was $800. It is becoming harder to sell tulips due to animals foraging the planted bulbs and gardeners reluctant to replant tulips. A customer requested daffodils. Although not part of the Tulip Festival, the suggestion will be considered for future bulb sales.

Christmas Wreaths  Warren passed around a signup sheet for volunteers to sell wreaths to merchants. A complaint had been made by a merchant that the wreath “dried out” quickly. An information tag describing wreath care will be included with each wreath sold. Sales will begin next week with deliveries planned for the Monday after Thanksgiving. Cindy will send an email to businesses alerting them to expect LIB members contacting them next week.

A question was raised regarding placing decorative greens on the empty planters at Vesuvio and Graves. A discussion about maintenance and clean up of greens followed. Debbie Burns volunteered to place the greens and clean up the greens after the holiday season.

Annual Meeting Cindy asked that reservations and payment for the Annual Luncheon and Meeting be given to Judy Heims by October 20. Please note crab cake or chicken entrée on your check.

Membership Update We now have 50 business members with $1012 paid dues including additional donations. Cindy passed the list of businesses and encouraged us to thank them for their support. We also have 50 paid personal memberships with $1285 paid dues.

The Endowment Fund and a scholarship for a horticultural student will be revisited in the future.

Christmas House Tour- (organized by Cindy Foster) The Historical Society Christmas House Tour will be on Sunday, December 3 from 10-4. There will be 3 two-hour shifts. Lewes in Bloom will provide docents for member Maddy Coss’s house.  A sign-up sheet was passed around. Any questions regarding the House tour, please contact Cindy Foster.

Old Business  We sold 100 postcards! Lewes Gifts, Sands and Stones, Hotel Rodney and the Chamber of Commerce featured postcards and note card packages of 4 cards for $6. Note cards did not sell very well despite the reduction of price.  T Shirts and Totes- Helga has several melon, khaki and white T Shirts available as well as several Tote Bags.

New Ideas   Diana O’Hagan proposed an informal exchange of gardening ideas, questions and information at each meeting. She volunteered to oversee each session. Attending members were very enthusiastic about the idea. The name “Garden Grapevine” was chosen for this monthly discussion. For information contact Diana.

December Meeting  We will have a Holiday theme meeting on Tuesday December 13. Jane Ellan Golde will again show us how to create table decorations. She will also have reasonably priced items available for purchase. She will need some volunteers to help her. Information will follow.

On line Payment access for LIB  Cindy presented information about the feasibility and costs of this service. She noted that membership applications and donations are ongoing throughout the year, and it will make wreath sales easier next year especially if we advertise with order forms in the Cape Gazette.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM.
