The meeting was called to order by Warren Golde, Co-Chair.  Lynda Dunham and Judy Heims reported on Membership.  Judy reported as of August 31st we have received $362+ from business members and $1220 from individual, supporting and sustaining members.  Donations from various sources total $535.  Thank you to the many members of our community for your support.  Also, a huge thanks to Gavin Braithwaite from the Chamber of Commerce for helping LIB gain many new business memberships.  A list of business memberships is on our Web Site.   Memberships are effective until May 1, 2012.  This may change in the future.

Annual Luncheon – Rose Canavan reported that this year’s Annual Luncheon (10th Anniversary of Lewes In Bloom) will be held at East Coast Garden Center, Cordrey Center on November 8th, 2011.  RSVP by October 20th, 2011.  A menu has been selected and members should contact Rose (644-2013) or mail checks to Judy Heims (payable to Lewes In Bloom), 409 Canary Court, Lewes, DE 19958.  The cost of the luncheon is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.  The menu choices are crab cakes or chicken breasts.  Please indicate on your check or a separate note what your choice is.  The guest speaker will be Diana Weiner, one of the judges from America In Bloom. Diana will speak about the history of America In Bloom and the new criteria they have adapted for judging.  Come join us for a fun afternoon.

Warren mentioned that Lewes In Bloom’s flower displays suffered damage from Hurricane Irene.  There was some clean up necessary.  Our thanks to those who volunteered the Friday before Labor Day to do the cleanup.  Warren also stated that the garden on Kings Highway is in need of a good revamping.  The yellow daisies are taking over, among other things.  Helga Gayowski suggested we make it much smaller and more manageable.  Warren added we could have more grass and suggested to make it about half the size it is now.  We could plant perennials that could be used to sell at our Spring Plant Sale when they need dividing.

Fall Plant Sale - The date of the upcoming Fall Plant Sale is October 1st.  Warren passed around a signup sheet.  We have a few T-shirts, books, gloves, notecards and tulips to sell.  The tulips will be in bags of 20.  They are pre-bagged, and have colored pictures to distinguish the assortment of colors available.  The price is $15 per bag of 20.  We have 150 bags to sell.

We need to have donated plants dropped off at Linda Davison’s house, 112 Seagull Drive, Lewes the morning of September 30th, between 9 am and noon.  Please identify your plants  with a tag or stick.  There will be pots and, some dirt available at Linda’s house beforehand.  Please call before you come (703-2676).  We need help on Friday morning to price and sort plants.

Fall or Winter Bus Trip - Warren asked the question if there was any interest in a fall or winter bus trip.  No response.
Christmas Wreaths -- Cindy Foster mentioned that the wreaths were already ordered by this time last year.  Warren suggested that the Board meet soon to further discuss this issue, and do our ordering.

The Speaker of the evening was “one of our own”, Diana O’Hagan.  Diana gave a wonderful talk on “Gardening With Ease”. (Website http:/www.gardeningwithease.com/.)  Since she was recently diagnosed with Arthritis in her back, she has had to change the way she gardens.  An avid gardener, and not to be deterred, she went online and found information put out by the Arthritis Foundation (http:/arthritistoday.org/index.php) regarding tools to help those with disabilities.  She demonstrated many handy tools she found at local stores.  The following are made by Fiskars: Soft Touch Micro Tip Pruning Snip, Power Gear Titanium Bypass Pruner, Power Gear 15” Anvil Pruner, Ropeless Pruning Stik Tree Pruner with Power-Stroke and Long Handle Grass Shears, and Triple-Claw Weeder.  A few other ideas were a Circle Hoe (long handle), standup dust pan and a Gopher pick up and reaching tool.  For those of us “aging gardeners” we found her suggestions quite welcoming.  Thank you for a delightful and informative talk, Diana.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Linda Davison
Secretary
