LEWES IN BLOOM

GENERAL MEETING AT

CADBURY AT LEWES

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

THOSE PRESENT:  Cindy Albright, Joyce Alti, Suzy Bitzer, Rose Canavan, Linda Davison, Lynda Dunham, John Feliciani, Judy Gallagher, Helga Gayowski, Tana Gilmore, Warren Golde, Judy Heims, Donna Hoyt, Joyce Maglione, Kathy McDonough, Barbara Petterson, Barbara Rudd, Judi Stormer, Nichol Thomson, Helen Waite, Carole Woodyard

The meeting was called to order by Cindy Albright, Co-Chair.  Everyone should have a copy of Judy Heim’s Treasurer’s Report attached here and sent out via Email with the Agenda.  The balance forwarded as of May 3, 2011 was $7,202.86.  The ending balance as of May 31, 2011 was $15,445.12.  Income total was $2,351.00 and expenditures were $1.087.77.  Including the balance of the City of Lewes monies the total bank balance as of May 31, 2011 was $15,445.12.

Membership now totals 39 paid members according to Lynda Dunham.  A mailing of approximately 500 letters went out to local businesses seeking Business Memberships.  It was suggested that when a business subscribes to a membership that we give them a sticker to place on their business window stating they support Lewes in Bloom.  The cost of a business membership is $25.

Flower beds on Second Street were the next order of business.  Brenda Brady said she would be attending the next meeting of the Parks N Recs Department in about two weeks and asked to be put on the agenda.  The beds are in terrible shape and are in need of help.  She asked if LIB would want to be involved in this project and, it was agreed, that we would be happy to partnership with others.

                                                                        -1-

Warren Golde, Co-Chair, spoke about the signs and rack cards.  He said that he and Dennis Davison had hung the LIB signs and rack cards holders.  They were placed on the barrels at St. Peters, on the bridge, Vesuvios, Graves and 1812 park.  Unfortunately, the rack card holder on the bridge was missing the next day. Warren also said the banners have been ordered and they should be received next week.

Garden Tour is set for June 18th.  Lewes in Bloom will only have one table.  Cindy Albright asked if we wanted to sell plants along with T-Shirts, gloves, books, notecards.  Several stated that plants did not do so well in the past at this sale.  Rack cards and membership signups will also be available.  A work sign up sheet was passed around.

Endowments were discussed.  The Board agreed at their last meeting to move some funds (approximately $5,000) into an endowment account.  The fund will be managed by the Greater Lewes Foundation which has seen similar non-profit funds appreciate over 10% recently.  We could set a goal of $10,000 before drawing on the fund which allows 5% per year.   That could be used as a $500 scholarship or we could come up with other initiatives.

Kathy McGovern would like to see Lewes In Bloom get families and kids involved with our organization.  This will be pursued in the future.

NEW BUSINESS - No new Business

Guest Speaker Jay Windsor was introduced by Tana Gilmore.   Mr. Windsor worked at one time as Horticulturist at the University of Delaware and the USDA Ag Extension.  He opened Windsor’s Gardens in 1973.  He showed photos and spoke about hardy annuals that do well in our area.  Some of the plants he particularly likes are Australian straw flowers, sweet potato vines in several colors and shapes.  Wishbone Impatience because they come in many colors and are trailing and Wave Petunias make a great ground cover.  He also stated that Lantana is tough and hardy but needs water.  He was very informative and also answered many questions at the end of his presentation.   Lewes in Bloom thanks Mr. Windsor for a wonderful evening.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm.

Respectively Submitted, Linda Davison, Secretary
