LHS

The Lewes Historical Society (LHS) began in 1961 as local residents identified a need to preserve Lewes' architectural heritage and for an organization to act as a steward for Lewes' past - a history that stretches back to humble Dutch origins in 1631. The Society has been recognized as one of Delaware's greatest assets and has been honored for our efforts by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and by the American Association for State & Local History. The Society celebrates the heritage of Lewes -- "The First Town in The First State!"

Colonial Herb Garden
at Fisher-Martin House

In the spring of 2007, the garden was refurbished by Lewes in Bloom, returning it to the original concept of a colonial herb garden. The plants are segregated by type such as medicinal, culinary, fragrant and flowering herbs, and herbs that were used for other household uses such as plants that were used for dyeing fabric. Herbs that were used by the Native Americans who populated the Cape Henlopen area during the 1700s also were added to the garden. New signage was installed to identify the herbs and their uses.
