Increasing in popularity is the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) which is held every week from June into October on the grounds of the Lewes Historical Society. In its fourth year, HLFM provides a family-friendly, community gathering place where consumers may purchase the freshest local foods available. It also provides alternative educational and marketing opportunities for farmers and others to help create local and sustainable food systems that are environmentally sound, economically viable and socially responsible.

Memory Garden with
Cadbury at Lewes residents
For the past two years, Cadbury at Lewes has generously provided LIB with a meeting place each month. In 2009, Cadbury at Lewes asked if the Lewes in Bloom volunteers would be interested in developing a gardening project with the residents. We dug right in and appreciated the chance to give back to our senior citizens. Each week the volunteers would select a project to work on with the residents. One week we spread peanut butter on pine cones and rolled them in birdseed, another time we painted flower pots to make into toad houses and we planted and maintained vegetables, annuals and herbs in the Memory Garden. Our new friends enjoyed the interaction and the chance to play in the dirt. Gardening is therapeutic and all of us benefited from this worthwhile project.
